After the last journal entry, I started to think.  If you could design your perfect paint program - what are the top 3 things it would absolutely HAVE to have?

I think mine is easy.

1. CANVAS ROTATION - the ability to rotate the canvas on the fly to allow for easier drawing.    Some programs like OpenCanvas, Painter, and SA have it, but Photoshop doesn't.  And no, the CANVAS>ROTATE option is not what I am talking about! :)

2. SPEED -  if you're slow you're useless...

3. BRUSH RESIZING - the ability to resize brushes immediately on the canvas.  I happen to like Sketchpad pro way of doing it quite a bit...  Again, Photoshop doesn't have it, someone mentioned that you can right click -- that's too cumbersome.  I'm talking about being able to resize the brush by clicking and dragging.  Even "[" and "]" is too slow at times.

What are yours?

I love Painter for the brush resizing on the fly option. To anyone who hasn't used it, you'll quickly fall in love with it and immediately be pissed that Photoshop can't do it. It certainly irks me.

I don't really use the canvass rotation in Painter though. When things aren't at the standard rotation, it looks a little pixelated and that bugs me. I just have my monitor on a big gyroscope and rotate the monitor with a cable connected to the back of my head. All I have to do is think hard enough and the monitor will rotate for me.

Lol.

Ya me too.. but the rotation is huge once you get used to it... I couldn't draw without it anymore.. way more natural...

1 and 2 in photshop would be awesome! those2 come in Toonboom Opus, but its an animation program and for non animation style art it failz.

to resize the brush you just hold down 'o' and drag the mouse left to right to resize, and to turn the canvas, you hold alt+ tab toether and then it creates an animation disc you can rotate around to any angle :D

Sai was once in translated into English in Ver. 5 of the trial, but many of the features did not work then. Of course now they have a lot more features, but went back to Japanese. It doesn't bother me so much as I remember most of the translation, but the only thing that bothered me about Sai was there is no text option. But aside from that it has pretty much every thing I wanted: Rotation of the canvas, fast pace, the sketching/inking capabilities of Open Canvas, airbrush from Photoshop, drybrush and color mixer from Painter, a sweet watercolor brush.
In my opinion they have the best selection tool of all the programs out there, not just a simple lasso but a true brush to select what you want.
Since they are still in trial periods, here is to hoping they add on the fly brush sizing, something based on pressure I would like to think. That way it is based more on how strong you press than keyboard or button controls.

It has on-the-fly brush sizing like Painter -- ie. press I think CTRL and ALT and drag... that said, I completely agree!!

I just got the newest version from the company and i got to tell you they have added a lot of tools, nothing new but some that were missing from the program itself such as a regular lasso, marker. Seems like they are getting closer to perfecting this thing, and it is gonna be cheap too about 45 to 50 USD. Compared to monsters like PS and Painter that is. Hopefully they add more features, though you were right about the on the fly thing, I totally forgot about it

I believe that with Photoshop you can rezise the brush (there is a key shortcut). But the rotation of the canvas is a good idea. You can do it very easy in Painter.. that's righ, but in Painter is not so easy to paint like in Photoshop..
Yeah!! I'm waiting the "perfect paint" program.

Painter 10 is loads faster and easier to deal with than previous versions. Thou the sketching is a bit jaggy when rotated or transferred from another program. Thats been my experience with it.
