Tutorials...

Fri Feb 15, 2008, 3:19 PM
So I get asked about making tutorials quite a bit.

I'd very much like to do that -- but I feel I'd really want to do a good job. Something that really takes you through the full process.

I've even been asked to do DVD's in the past, but always was a bit hesitant, as those are usually pretty highly priced. Most of which goes to the "publisher" and not me anyhow...

That said, I've been wondering what the 'magic' price point is under which you'd consider buying such a DVD. If it gets pirated, no one wins, so I'd rather make it as affordable as possible...

Any thoughts?

***EDIT: If you got DVD production experience (especially flash authoring), or know how to set up a pay-to-download video on a website, I'd love to talk to you -- please email me! :)

if you are worried about it being pirated and aren't concerned with the money, then it might be a good idea to just torrent it yourself to start with.

I think we're all right behind you on this, bud. I want to support YOU (not some corporate entity) and I'd want you to be able to impart your wisdom at a price that's good for both you AND us.

As far as actual price goes, I'd say that probably between 20 and 30 dollars would be good. I'm thinking of the urge to pirate here, not of how great you are (because...ya know...I'd spend a good deal more just because you're rad).

Wow...I don't know if this was helpful at all. I'm glad you're considering doing this though!

Gnomon dvds are fairly expensive but at the same time you really do get a good product at the end of it. Seein as youre saying youd want to do a good job on it, i dont see that price as too unreasonable.

conceptart.org have that whole digital download thing going at the moment and those seem to be a good conveinient way to get videos out for a decent price. Having not brought one myself i dont really know what youre getting for the $14-$20... your call there.

Good luck with it, will be nice to see..
i'd buy a dvd of you painting for 50 bucks!

but you're right, the publisher gets everything.

20?
Most of the gnomom stuff goes from like $50 to $100. and alot of artist complain about it. so i guess cheaper than that is affordable.....maybe not profitable.....but affordable. Also, this is the age of the internet and you're kinda ridiculously famous so........it's gonna get pirated. But the other side of that coin is alotta people would buy it.

I think $25 or $35 is probably going to be the sweet spot. If you need an editor/title/DVD author type person let me know. I'm not sure where you are located or I would offer to record it as well. Anywho...I went to Temple Univ. in Philly for my film dgree and NYU for 3D/Visual Effects for my Masters. I already have some ideas for the menus and stuff. Anyway, like I said if you would prefer to produce it yourself and need help, don't hesitate to shoot me a note.

Forget DVD. You can avoid extra costs, packaging, shipping, filling orders. Have a pay per download tutorial!

Most go for 50. good price. In fact, I bought Steve's comic book coloring on Gnomon just this week. I like gnomon's quality/content

WHAT ABOUT A PODCAST?!

either way, I'm very interested in such material since I'm looking on learning coloring right now.
